Our musical

Just Be Me uses music and storytelling to explore universal human experiences and encourage audiences to look beyond assumptions and connect with people whose lives may be different from their own.

The story

Meet the ideas, themes and creative voices behind our original performance work.

Love and Pride Productions North West CIC was founded by experienced theatre professionals with decades of combined experience across professional theatre, education, creative development and community engagement.

Founder and Creative Director Dave Benson brings over 30 years of professional experience across theatre, television and film, working throughout the UK, Ireland, Europe and the USA. His career as a scenic designer, production specialist and creative practitioner includes major productions, European premieres and international theatre projects.

Dave’s professional development began at Oldham Theatre Workshop, followed by an early opportunity at Oldham Coliseum working on Hot Stuff, which led to a two-year YTS theatre electrician apprenticeship and his transition into professional theatre. His career has been shaped by working alongside experienced directors, designers, technicians and performers, whose mentorship and knowledge-sharing have continued to influence his own commitment to developing others and supporting emerging theatre-makers.

Co-founder Jayne Buchanan brings extensive experience in theatre education, performance development and community arts. An experienced speech and drama practitioner, educator and LAMDA examiner, she has spent many years supporting performers of different ages and abilities, developing confidence, communication and creative skills. Her professional experience ensures that participant development and learning are integral to the organisation’s practice.

Dave and Jayne have worked together through BRIT Theatre, delivering professional and community productions with support from organisations including Oldham Coliseum, Oldham Library, Oldham College and Grange Arts Centre. Their combined experience encompasses production, education, creative development, performance training and community engagement.

Their approach is rooted in professional development and the belief that knowledge should be shared. Dave’s own career was strengthened by the mentorship of experienced theatre professionals, while Jayne’s work has focused on developing performers and supporting people to build confidence and skills. This combination of industry experience, education and mentorship provides a strong foundation for delivering high-quality theatre while creating meaningful development opportunities for participants.

Together, Dave and Jayne bring the professional experience, creative knowledge and developmental expertise required to deliver Just Be Me to a high standard while supporting the next generation of theatre-makers.

Creative journey

Love and Pride Productions North West CIC creates inclusive theatre that brings people together through participation, learning and shared storytelling. We believe communities should not simply watch theatre—they should help create it.

Our productions are developed with communities, not simply for them. By involving participants in workshops, script readings and creative discussions, we ensure that lived experiences help shape authentic, relevant and meaningful work.

About us

Learn more about the people and purpose behind Love and Pride Productions.

Love and Pride Productions North West CIC was founded on a simple belief: everyone deserves to feel safe, valued and accepted for who they are.

The inspiration for our flagship musical, Just Be Me, came from a deeply personal experience that highlighted both the power of human connection and the impact of exclusion.

While visiting Turkey, Dave Benson formed friendships with local people and was welcomed into aspects of Turkish culture, including conversations about faith, family and tradition. These experiences deepened his appreciation of the values that connect people across cultures: compassion, belonging and mutual respect.

A chance encounter with a young Kurdish dengbêj singer became particularly significant. A traditional storyteller and musician, he carried generations of history and culture through song. Yet behind his creativity and warmth was a personal struggle: he feared expressing important aspects of his identity because of possible judgement and rejection.

The contrast between his extraordinary ability to express himself through music and his fear of being fully himself prompted a powerful question: how many people live without feeling able to express who they truly are?

Returning to the UK, Dave encountered Blackpool Pride and witnessed a strikingly different experience—people of all ages and backgrounds coming together openly through music, performance and celebration. It demonstrated the power of visibility, acceptance and community, and reinforced his belief that creativity can build understanding and connection.

These experiences became the foundation of Just Be Me.

Although fictional, the musical explores universal themes of identity, family, love, acceptance and belonging. Rather than telling audiences what to think, it invites them to see the world through the experiences of others, encouraging empathy and understanding.

These values underpin Love and Pride Productions North West CIC. We use high-quality theatre, creative learning and community participation to create opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to connect, develop confidence and express themselves.

Our work aims to:

  • Build confidence, creativity and self-expression.
  • Reduce isolation by creating opportunities for connection.
  • Encourage understanding between different communities.
  • Widen access to theatre and creative opportunities.
  • Create welcoming spaces where people feel valued and included.

At the heart of our work is a simple belief: when people have the opportunity to express themselves, share their stories and connect with others, communities become stronger.

Everyone deserves the freedom to be themselves.
